Emma Brown became the executive director of GIFFORDS in January 2024, where she oversees the organization’s work to save lives from gun violence through shifting culture, changing policies, and challenging injustice.

Prior to leading GIFFORDS, Emma served as campaign manager for Senator Mark Kelly’s 2022 reelection campaign in Arizona, where she ran a $100 million effort that reelected a Democratic senator in Arizona for the first time in 34 years. In 2020, Emma served as the coordinated campaign director for President Biden’s campaign in Arizona, leading the largest voter contact program in state history and marking the first time a Democratic presidential campaign carried Arizona since 1996. During that cycle, she also served as Senator Kelly’s deputy campaign manager.

On this episode of The Siren Podcast, Jo sits down with Rep. Raskin to discuss one of the most brazen corruption schemes of the Trump era: his $1.776 billion "anti-weaponization" fund designed exclusively to reward January 6th insurrectionists and election deniers with cash prizes.

Rep. Raskin breaks down how the fund came to be, which was rooted in a lawsuit Trump filed against the government over the release of his tax returns. The payouts have already started, with Trump ally and former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn receiving $1.25 million and Trump sycophant Carter Page receiving the same amount. Even Jan. 6 rioter Ashley Babbitt’s family, received $5 million, after two federal investigations showed that police had acted responsibly during her case.

Meanwhile, the officers who were beaten, hospitalized, and forced out of their careers defending the Capitol on January 6th have received nothing except death threats from Donald Trump’s rabid supporters.

Jo and Rep. Raskin also get into the constitutional problems with the fund — of which there are more than a dozen. Notably, the 14th Amendment, passed after the Civil War, explicitly bars the government from compensating insurrectionists. The domestic emoluments clause prohibits the president from receiving additional payments from the federal government. And under the Constitution, it’s Congress (not the executive branch or Donald Trump) that appropriates money. And unsurprisingly, none of that stopped the Trump regime from moving forward anyway.

Finally, Rep. Raskin walks through the legislation he’s introduced to shut this whole blatantly illegal scheme down, by blocking any payments to January 6th participants, forbidding the settlement of claims made by the president or his family, and closing the door on the blanket immunity the DOJ quietly tucked into the agreement.

The Memorandum of Understanding, which Trump signed at Versailles, commits $300 billion dollars to Iran, refrains the U.S. from interfering in internal Iranian affairs, ends the U.S. naval blockade, removes all economic sanctions against Iran, and unfreezes Iranian assets.

In other words, this MOU is a complete loss for the U.S., who already had a signed agreement with Iran (the JCPOA) prior to Trump’s war, which already prohibited Iranian nuclear development, and was successful in that regard. While the deal has yet to be fully signed, Iran has now gained benefits that it did not have prior to Trump launching the war four months ago, according to the MOU that Trump signed.

Imagine, for a second, the conservative outrage if Joe Biden had signed this deal.

Like the man-child he is, Trump sped through a series of negotiations with Iran to arrive at a deal on his birthday. Trump’s failed leadership and ever-inflating ego was juxtaposed nicely today with the opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Library in Chicago, where former President Obama gave a speech urging resistance to “cynicism and despair.”

For a moment, normalcy in America had returned. President Obama was joined by all former living presidents, including Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. Notably, Donald Trump was not there.

The Florida Supreme Court just ruled yesterday that Ron DeSantis’ and Florida Republicans’ illegal gerrymandered map, that removes up to 4 Democratic seats, was legal and could proceed. This comes as the Virginia Supreme Court recently ruled that the Democrats’ attempt at redistricting in response to Texas’ gerrymandering could not proceed. There seems to be different rules for the two major parties in America, especially since Ron DeSantis himself picked the majority of the Florida Supreme Court deciding this case.

After the Supreme Court gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, Republican-led legislatures moved within hours to gerrymander districts across the South. Jo and Rep. Horsford discuss this lightning-fast reaction by southern states, including in Alabama, a state where Black residents make up over a third of the population. Voters are being carved out of representation they fought decades to win. In addition, the duo speaks about what this might mean for Horsford’s home state of Nevada, where Horsford says we must make the 2026 midterm elections “too big to rig.”

Then there’s the Faster Labor Contracts Act, which came to a vote this week in an historic victory for unions across the nation. The bill would stop corporations from using endless negotiation delays to block workers from ever signing a union contract. Rep. Horsford voted yes on the bill along with every every other Democrat. Comparatively, 192 Republicans voted no. As Rep. Horsford says, that tells you everything you need to know about whose side they’re on.

On the topic of Social Security and Medicare, Rep. Horsford represents a district where more than half of his constituents rely on Social Security as their only source of retirement income. An average check comes in at around $1,000 a month for rent, co-pays, groceries, and now skyrocketing gas prices. And if that wasn’t bad enough, Speaker Mike Johnson was recently caught on tape calling cuts to these programs in the form of “adjustments” and “fixes,” as the country still reels from Elon Musk’s disastrous cuts to Social Security from DOGE.

When facing the public, these same officials have repeatedly said the files were either fake, nothing to worry about, were planted by the Biden White House, or that Trump was innocent. But this article paints an entirely different picture, one where the highest level officials running the U.S. government met in secret, using White House grounds and taxpayer funds, to plot how they would cover up the president’s crimes and lie to Congress under Oath. It’s much, much worse than Watergate.

It’s hard to imagine another scenario that would demand more outrage from the American public than this. But for Donald Trump, it truly is just another Thursday. Just yesterday, Donald Trump declared that his birthday wish was for “world peace.” He then told reporters he would continue to “bomb the sh*t out of Iran,” (as he had been doing for the past two days), before literally minutes later, saying that the strikes were cancelled.

This back and forth has been going on every single day since Trump launched the war. And today, we are in a much more dangerous and far worse spot when it comes to our relations with Iran, and the power they hold on the world stage. And it’s all thanks to Donald Trump.
