She connects the crisis of sexual violence against Native women to its deeper roots — colonization, systemic oppression, racism, and sexism — and makes the case that real solutions must address these structural forces, not just their symptoms. She also highlights gaps in policy and tribal jurisdiction that leave many without protection.

Grounded in Indigenous values like respect, reciprocity, and community, Nicole shares a path forward centered on healing and prevention. From engaging men and boys to challenging harmful media narratives, her work emphasizes collective responsibility. Through initiatives like healing response teams and survivor support, she offers a vision of safety built not just through systems, but through culture, accountability, and care.

Subscribe now

Share

Share The Siren

What Gets Lost in the Immigration Debate

A conversation with Jessica Zweng

Jill Jonassen

In this episode, I chat with immigrant rights attorney Jessica Zweng about what often goes unspoken: the U.S. immigration system is not broken. It is functioning as it was designed.

Jessica walks me through how racial hierarchies have been embedded in immigration law from the very beginning. These structures continue to shape who is welcomed, who is excluded, and who is criminalized. She challenges the idea of “legal pathways,” describing them as narrow and often inaccessible routes that reinforce inequality rather than resolve it.

We also explore the machinery of enforcement. Our conversation covers racial profiling, the overlap between criminal and immigration law, and a detention system influenced not only by policy but by profit. Jessica explains that mandatory detention sits at the center of this system, which is why it is a key focus for those calling to abolish ICE.

Jessica ultimately calls for more than reform. She invites us to imagine and build a system rooted in dignity, care, and collective humanity.

As she says, “We must build a world rooted in life and love.”

Subscribe now

Share

Share The Siren

Building Resilience in an Age of Overload

A conversation with Dr. Brianna Migliore

Jill Jonassen

In this episode, I chat with neuroscientist, writer, and educator Dr. Brianna Migliore about how maladaptive persistence—our tendency to keep pushing even when something is no longer serving us—shapes political behavior and media consumption in destabilizing times. Drawing from neuroscience, she explains how constant exposure to social media and video content can quietly impact both our mental and physical health. “We need enough information, then we must disengage,” she says, underscoring the importance of intentional media boundaries for resilience. We also explore how societal instability reverberates through the body, why emotional regulation is foundational to meaningful societal change, and how community connection becomes a critical buffer in turbulent times. For more than a decade, Ellie has worked behind the scenes in transcription, but her deep dive into the Epstein files began less as an assignment and more as a calling. She describes how a quiet curiosity evolved into a relentless effort to untangle a web of wealth, power, and abuse that stretches far beyond one notorious name. What she found, she says, reveals not just the significance of places like Zorro Ranch, but a broader network that challenges our assumptions about accountability at the highest levels. “Money breaks you,” she reflects, pointing to the way extreme wealth can erode empathy and shield wrongdoing. Yet Ellie’s work is grounded in something more hopeful: the power of collective effort. She credits survivors and everyday citizens with pushing the story forward when institutions failed.

Ultimately, her investigation becomes a call to reexamine societal priorities—to believe women, to resist desensitization to abuse, and to build a world where every community, especially the most marginalized, receives the attention and justice it deserves.

Subscribe now

Share

Share The Siren

This Political Moment Demands Accountability and Collective Action

A conversation with Danielle Moodie

Jill Jonassen

In this episode I chat with Danielle Moodie, CEO and Founder of DAM Media Strategies and host of The Danielle Moodie Show. The Uvalde school shooting marked a turning point, pushing Kate to get uncomfortable, speak up, and help other women recognize their power in political engagement. Jeff traces the roots of the problem back to the Citizens United decision, which unleashed a surge in corporate spending and reshaped the American political landscape through the rise of Super PACs. Montana, with its storied history of resisting corporate influence, serves as the perfect proving ground for reform. The Montana Plan seeks to strip corporations of their political spending power, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and grassroots engagement as essential tools for meaningful change.

Jeff’s advice is simple but powerful: start by asking your friends, neighbors, or even strangers, “Is there too much money in politics?” He notes that nearly everyone will say yes—and that first acknowledgment is the opening to real action. By turning awareness into conversation, citizens begin to see that change is possible. If successful, the Montana Plan could offer a model for other states, proving that when communities act collectively, even entrenched political systems can be challenged and reimagined.

Subscribe now

Share

Share The Siren

America Has Never Been Fair, But It Could Be

A conversation with Kate Barr

Jill Jonassen

In this episode, I chat with Kate Barr, a behavioral scientist and political disruptor who ran an intentionally unwinnable 2024 North Carolina state senate race to expose gerrymandering. Kate shares how she went from being mad to being action-oriented, and how running as “Kate Barr Can’t Win” became unexpectedly joyful, authentic, and effective. Now she is taking an even bolder step by switching to the Republican Party, not because her values have changed, but because the primary is the only election that truly counts in a gerrymandered district. She is challenging incumbent Tim Moore with a platform focused on fair maps, affordability, and a tax system that asks more of billionaires. With humor as her political superpower, Kate argues that voters still have meaningful power, that laughter lowers defenses, and that a fairer America, one she can be proud to pass on to her kids, is still worth fighting for.

You can follow and support Kate at www.katebarrcanwin.com.

Subscribe now

Share

Share The Siren

Being in Community is How We Survive This

A conversation with Jess Craven

Jill Jonassen

Activist Jess Craven is the light we need at this moment. Sheehan, creator of PBS’s Civics Made Easy and author of What Does the Constitution Actually Say?, explains that our lack of civic knowledge stems from a decades-long decline in civics education. Harry’s story is one of deep purpose, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to truth. He recounted pivotal moments in his career, including witnessing history during the passing of Obamacare and the harrowing reality of January 6th, which he described as a violent insurrection against our government. His reflections on that day were sobering, especially as he addressed the current attempts to rewrite the narrative and the troubling pardons granted to some participants. Stacey shares how her journey as a mother to children with complex medical needs led her to the halls of Congress, fighting for equitable healthcare, Medicaid access, and the inclusion of children with disabilities in all facets of life. Similarly, Alexis’s story of raising her daughter Kinsley—a “little ray of sunshine”—highlights the emotional and logistical challenges families face when navigating a system not built with them in mind.

Medicaid emerges as a lifeline in both stories—not just a safety net, but a foundational support that allows families to care for their children at home, access specialists, and avoid medical and financial crises. Whether it’s correcting harmful myths about vaccines or pushing back against attacks on Medicaid, these stories are a call to action: to advocate, to listen, and to work toward a world where every child, regardless of medical complexity, has what they need to thrive.

You can support the work of Little Lobbyists and learn more about their mission at littlelobbyists.org.

Subscribe now

Share

Share The Siren

Get Fake Science Out of Politics

A conversations with Rep. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the political landscape or unsure where to begin, this conversation is for you.

Subscribe now

Share

Share The Siren

Faith Should Be Inclusive

A conversation with April Ajoy

Jill Jonassen

In my conversation with April Ajoy, we dive into the complex and often overlooked intersection of Christian faith, politics, and personal identity. Growing up in a Christian household, April’s faith was more than just a belief, it was her identity. As figures like Trump and Mike Johnson rose to prominence, she started to realize how her beliefs were being used to advance a political agenda. That’s when she started her journey toward healing and understanding. “I want a world without hate,” she says. “A world where we can question, learn, and grow together, without being bound by the pressures of harmful ideologies.”

I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! And if you want to hear more from April, I highly recommend getting her book, Star Spangled Jesus. It’s a powerful, humorous, and at times heartbreaking narrative that sheds light on the real-world impact of Christian nationalism.

Subscribe now

Share

Share The Siren

Free Federal IDs Would Solve a lot of Problems

A conversation with Kat Calvin

Jill Jonassen

Kat Calvin is the Founder and Executive Director of Spread The Vote + Project ID and the Co-Founder and CEO of the Project ID Action Fund. She was a high school English teacher in rural Missouri. But then Trump won in 2016, sparking a political awakening that changed everything. That’s when Jess decided to run for office in a deeply red district. Even though she didn’t win, she is still doing the work by leading Blue Missouri, an organization dedicated to supporting down-ballot Democratic candidates in rural communities. Her mission is clear and compelling: every voter is worth it.

This is a good reminder to all of us that winning starts with being on the ballot and that every down-ballot Democrat across the country needs our support.

Share

Share The Siren
