Donald Trump has been attempting to whitewash the events of January 6th since the day it happened. It’s one of the most well-documented and recorded events in human history, yet Republicans still try to paint the insurrection as a “day of love.”
In his latest effort to reward those who attempted to overthrow the United States and turn it into a dictatorship, Trump’s DOJ has now moved vacate the convictions of Proud Boys members who acted violently during the riot. Even though Trump pardoned the vast majority of Jan. 6 offenders (over 1,500) on the first day of his second term, some rioters only received commutations. This latest action by the DOJ would formally erase these remaining convictions, releasing four Proud Boys members who were charged with felonies and seditious conspiracy.
Under Donald Trump, the DOJ sounds and operates like Orwell’s Ministry of Truth from 1984, with DOJ officials saying these Jan. 6 convictions should be overturned "in the interests of justice." Trump isn’t just giving these insurrectionists a get-out-of-jail free card. He’s trying to vacate their sentences, or in other words, saying “your crime never happened.”
As Harry Dunn tells us on this episode of The Siren Podcast: “What this also does is creates an avenue, if you will, for these people to sue the government. Because if they vacate their convictions, what’s to stop them from saying, ‘Hey, I was prosecuted unfairly and maliciously.’ There’s nothing to stop that. They will file civil lawsuits and sue the government. And the biggest thing that I want people to understand about these lawsuits, not only is it crap and a slap in the face, it’s costing the American taxpayers money.”
