Community Solidarity Can Deter ICE

A Conversation with Baltazar Enriquez

In this episode, I chat with Baltazar Enriquez, president of the Little Village Community Council, about life in Chicago’s Little Village. This neighborhood is full of hardworking, resilient families—but ICE continues to target immigrant communities here.

Baltazar stressed the power of community solidarity. Grassroots efforts, education about rights, and looking out for one another aren’t just helpful—they can actually deter ICE actions. The whistle campaign, which began locally, has become a national movement, showing what happens when neighbors organize and support each other.

For him, the fight goes beyond protection. “A better community is one built on love and support for all,” Baltazar says. In Little Village, standing together is survival, activism, and hope—all at once.
