For decades, conservatives have been funding, cultivating, and weaponizing a sprawling right-wing media infrastructure, from talk radio with Rush Limbaugh, to Fox News with Jesse Watters, to a constellation of local outlets that look like independent journalism but are, in reality, Republican propaganda delivery systems (see Sinclair Broadcast Group). And for just as long, the left has had no real answer.
This week on The Siren Podcast, Jo sits down with Tara McGowan, founder and publisher of the massively successful Courier Newsroom and the host of Gloves Off. Courier is one of the fastest-growing local news networks in the country, prioritizing factual reporting and culturally relevant topics designed to break through to modern audiences. Tara is one of the most knowledgable people on the left working to build a progressive media ecosystem.
Today, the vast majority of Americans don’t get their news from cable, or from legacy media outlets anymore. They get it from social media. From Facebook pages and Instagram posts shared in the family group chat. From “manosphere” podcasts like Joe Rogan and flashy YouTube shows designed to appeal to the growing anger from young men and the loneliness exacerbated by the COVID pandemic, both of which the MAGA movement has strongly capitalized on. This strategy, of “flooding the zone with sh*t” (as Steve Bannon put it) has been one of the most effective and influential operations in modern American politics, massively contributing to Donald Trump’s re-election in 2024.
Courier Newsroom is playing a leading role in fighting back and expanding the left’s media ecosystem, through a robust rapid response strategy on social media with Courier National. Additionally, Courier operates state-based newsrooms in crucial states like Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Just recently, Courier announced they would be expanding their newsroom operation to 20 states in 2026, including California, Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, and Utah.
The domination of the right-wing media ecosystem has resulted in the GOP’s ability to shape the national conversation at a moment’s notice. The access lent to MAGA lawmakers has provided these new media operations with legitimacy given by legacy media, which we’ve all seen the ramifications of.
Without the growing media network on the left, such as Meidas Touch, Courier, Zeteo, The Bulwark, Don Lemon, Jim Acosta, Find Out Media, The Dangerous Ones, and yes, The Siren, Trump’s Epstein coverup would not have left such a massive impact. ICE’s occupation of Minneapolis and the hundreds of videos demonstrating their brutality, including the executions of Americans, would not have been viewed at the level they were, exposing the Trump regime’s authoritarianism. The list goes on and on.
Jo and Tara break down the anatomy of right-wing media dominance and what it actually takes to counter it, how Democrats are expanding their own media ecosystem, Courier’s Epstein Files search database, and Trump’s betrayal of his supporters.
All of this and more, right here on The Siren Network.
