A few years ago, running for Congress wasn’t on Harry Dunn’s mind.
But on Jan 6th, 2021, Harry’s life was changed forever. He stared down a mob of insurrectionists and rioters, some carrying confederate flags, eager to attack police officers and members of Congress.
In an interview with the New York Times, Harry said, “A lot of us Black officers fought a different battle than everybody else fought. I said to my buddy, ‘I got called [slur] a couple dozen times today.’ I’m looking at him. He’s got blood on him. I’ve got bloody knuckles. We’re hurting. That’s when I said, ‘Is this America?’ and I started crying. Tears are coming down my face. ‘Is this America?’”
Harry’s experience on January 6th showed him a “new path,” one where he knew he had to do something to continue the fight to save democracy.
As Harry told us, “Listen, if January 6th didn’t happen, then I’m probably not running. Hell, I’m a hundred percent not running for Congress right now. You know, I’m donating my 50 bucks to my favorite candidate, putting up a yard sign, and phone banking.”
Now, Harry has been endorsed by Nancy Pelosi, and has big plans for the future. Jo and Harry discuss all of this and more, including his perspective on Trump’s Iran War, the 2026 midterms, and the missing Jan. 6 plaque.
