A bombshell article by ProPublica has revealed the hellish environment that hundreds of children are living in after being detained by ICE. Children are being denied visits with their parents for more than a month, are contracting illness from the poor water quality in detention facilities, and are reporting signs of depression in their cries for help. Other children are contracting respiratory infections and measles. A separate report revealed more than 600 children being detained by ICE, a new record, higher than the previous four years combined.
20 days is the maximum amount of time children can be held in detention for, according to long-standing legal settlements. But according to ProPublica, “about 300 kids sent to Dilley by the Trump administration were there for more than a month.”
