We’ve all seen the countless videos of ICE storming regions of Minneapolis over the last week on social media. We’ve seen ICE beating underage American citizens and then throwing their bodies into random parking lots. We’ve seen them attack onlookers and spray journalists with chemical deterrents. And yes, we’ve seen them shoot and kill.
What’s happening is clear: Donald Trump and ICE are turning American cities into active war zones.
And make no mistake why. What Trump and his ICE minions want more than anything else is to generate fear. They want to conduct their mass deportation operation in the dark, with no evidence of the numerous crimes and rights violations they commit on an hourly basis.
They want to disappear people who have accents, who have darker skin, who don’t “look” like Americans. And they don’t want people questioning them.
We’ve seen resistance and protest against their actions work before, like in Los Angeles, Chicago, and during their El Salvador disappearing act. Public pressure and outcry worked. That’s why the videos are so important in this moment.
Americans must continue to see what ICE is doing. We can’t shy away from the tragedy and anger we feel.
