Jeff Landry, the Governor of Louisiana has decided to cancel the ongoing primary elections in his state, following the Supreme Court’s devastating ruling gutting Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act on Wednesday. Gov. Landry issued an executive order delaying the elections until July 15, at the earliest.
This will give state legislators time to redraw the state’s congressional map into a version that electorally benefits the Republican party. This move is a blatant, partisan power grab designed to help Trump and the Republican party win in the 2026 midterms and beyond. Absentee voting for this primary election was underway in Louisiana, with many voters having already submitted early ballots.
Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act has long been labeled as the “crown jewel” of the Civil Rights Movement. With SCOTUS’s recent decision, it will now allow states to enact discriminatory maps, cutting entire populations out of holding political power, and erasing decades of progress.
Already, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker have vowed to fight back with redistricting of their own in response to right-wing gerrymandering. Leader Hakeem Jeffries added that Democrats were prepared to respond with redistricting in Maryland and Colorado, as well.
Jo and BDD dive into all of this and more on this episode, in addition to Pete Hegseth’s disastrous Senate hearing today, where he refused to define “No Quarter,” Trump believing he could qualify as an astronaut due to his “athletic ability,” and Trump putting his face on U.S. passports in his latest authoritarian move.
