This morning, Iran claimed it had shot down a U.S. fighter jet over Iran, subsequently releasing pictures of what Iran State Media says is the jet. U.S. officials have since confirmed the attack, but said only one of the two crew members have been recovered. This is the first time during Trump’s Iran War, which has now been ongoing for five weeks, that a U.S. fighter jet has been brought down over Iran, significantly tarnishing Trump’s recent statements that Iran had been bombed “back to the Stone Ages,” and Hegseth’s statement that the U.S. had achieved control of Iran’s skies.
Today’s development closely follows news that Pete Hegseth fired the Army Chief of Staff, in addition to two other Army generals, in the middle of the Iran War. The destruction of this fighter jet, and what may now ensue during the search for the missing U.S. crew member, may plunge the already unstable situation into an even darker place, and could have massive military, political, and diplomatic ramifications for Donald Trump domestically.
In addition, Iranian officials have taken to Twitter to mock the U.S. and its leadership, with Mohammad Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s Parliament, tweeting: “This brilliant no-strategy war they started has now been downgraded from ‘regime change’ to ‘Hey! Can anyone find our pilots? Please?'”
