In the lead up to the 2024 election, if you spoke to many of Donald Trump’s most ardent supports, and questioned them on the casual racism, xenophobia, or just plain cruel attacks coming out of Trump’s mouth on a daily basis, you would likely hear one of two responses:
He didn’t mean it, he was just joking.
He’s not actually going to do that, you have Trump Derangement Syndrome.
And sure enough, as Trump and his cabinet of unqualified quacks and Fox News hosts assumed power for the 2nd time, they did exactly what they said they were going to do. Funny how that works, huh?
Even as the White House carries out their illegal attacks on boats in the Caribbean Ocean, or countless videos show U.S. citizens being detained, arrested, and removed by ICE, Trump’s personal army of loyalist political soldiers, they’re lying to the American public with every breath.
As Mehdi says during today’s episode, the starting position with this administration has to be “they are lying until they prove otherwise.” He continued, saying, “With these guys it’s guilty until proven innocent. That has to be the position, because otherwise, you’re just a fool. […] At some point as a reporter you’ve got to say, ‘They’ve lied to me last week, they lied to me the week before, they lied to me every month of the first administration, but today? I think they’re telling the truth.’”
Donald Trump and his acolytes have succeeded in making racism mainstream in American politics. But that doesn’t mean we’re going to roll over and let them win.
