After four months of lying, confusion, backtracking, bombing, and calls for ending entire civilizations, Donald Trump has decided to ram through a total concession to Iran of the war that he started.
The Memorandum of Understanding, which Trump signed at Versailles, commits $300 billion dollars to Iran, refrains the U.S. from interfering in internal Iranian affairs, ends the U.S. naval blockade, removes all economic sanctions against Iran, and unfreezes Iranian assets.
In other words, this MOU is a complete loss for the U.S., who already had a signed agreement with Iran (the JCPOA) prior to Trump’s war, which already prohibited Iranian nuclear development, and was successful in that regard. While the deal has yet to be fully signed, Iran has now gained benefits that it did not have prior to Trump launching the war four months ago, according to the MOU that Trump signed.
Imagine, for a second, the conservative outrage if Joe Biden had signed this deal.
Like the man-child he is, Trump sped through a series of negotiations with Iran to arrive at a deal on his birthday. Trump’s failed leadership and ever-inflating ego was juxtaposed nicely today with the opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Library in Chicago, where former President Obama gave a speech urging resistance to “cynicism and despair.”
For a moment, normalcy in America had returned. President Obama was joined by all former living presidents, including Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. Notably, Donald Trump was not there.
